GEO vs AEO: What Is the Difference?

A plain-language guide to GEO and AEO: what each means, how they overlap with SEO and what to do about them.

GEO vs AEO: What Is the Difference?

By the Seovoro Team · Last updated October 6, 2026

Key takeaways
  • AEO aims to make your content the direct answer. GEO aims to make AI tools mention or cite your content in generated answers.
  • The two overlap heavily, and both sit on top of normal SEO: crawlable, helpful, trustworthy pages.
  • Google says you do not need special files or markup to appear in its AI features.
  • No one can guarantee a citation. Measure mentions, referrals and brand searches instead.

Two new terms keep coming up in SEO conversations: AEO and GEO. People use them in different ways, and the definitions are not formally standardized. This guide explains how we use them, where they differ from classic SEO and what to do about them without chasing hype.

The short definitions

  • SEO (search engine optimization) helps your pages get found and ranked in search results.
  • AEO (answer engine optimization) focuses on being the direct answer: featured snippets, voice assistants and AI answers that respond to a question.
  • GEO (generative engine optimization) focuses on being mentioned or cited inside answers written by generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Google AI Overviews.

Where they overlap

In practice the three share most of the work. Pages must be crawlable and fast, content must be helpful and accurate, and your brand must be clear and trusted. If a page cannot be crawled or says little of value, no label will rescue it. That is why we treat AEO and GEO as extensions of strong SEO, not replacements.

What to do in practice

  1. Answer questions directly. Put a short, clear answer near the top of the page, then explain.
  2. Use clear headings and structure. Question-style headings, short paragraphs, lists and tables are easy for people and machines to read.
  3. Be specific and honest. Original examples, real numbers and clear sources make content more useful and easier to trust.
  4. Show who is behind it. Author pages, an About page and consistent business details help people and systems understand your brand.
  5. Keep pages crawlable. Do not block important pages in robots.txt, and keep an accurate sitemap.
  6. Earn mentions. Useful tools, research and guides are the kind of thing others link to and talk about.

How to measure it

  • Referral traffic. In Analytics, look for visits from AI tools and AI search sources.
  • Brand searches. A rise in searches for your brand name can show growing awareness.
  • Manual checks. Ask relevant questions in the main AI tools and note whether and how your brand appears. Results vary, so repeat over time.
  • Normal SEO metrics. Impressions, clicks and rankings still matter.

What Google says

Google's own documentation on AI features says the same SEO best practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that you do not need to create special files or markup to appear. Read it in AI features and your website and its guide to optimizing for AI features. We cover this in more detail in our guide to getting cited in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO the same as AEO?

Not exactly. AEO focuses on being the direct answer to a question, while GEO focuses on being mentioned or cited in answers written by generative AI. They overlap heavily.

Do I need to stop doing SEO?

No. SEO is the foundation. Pages that cannot be found or that offer little value will not be used by any search or AI system.

Does llms.txt help me get cited?

Some sites publish one, but Google says you do not need special AI files to appear in its AI features. Treat it as optional, not a ranking tool.

Can anyone guarantee that an AI tool will cite my site?

No. These systems change often. Focus on helpful content, clear structure and a trusted brand.

How long does it take to see results?

There is no fixed timeline. Measure over months using referrals, brand searches and regular SEO metrics.
