Key takeaways
- Google's own guide (May 2026) says optimizing for AI Overviews and AI Mode is still SEO, because they run on its core ranking and quality systems.
- A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to be used in Google's AI features. No special AI markup is needed.
- Original, specific content with clear authorship gives AI answers something worth citing.
- No one can guarantee citations. Check your visibility monthly and expect gradual change.
AI answers now sit at the top of many searches. The short version of how to get cited in them: make your site easy to crawl, say clear and original things, and make it obvious who you are. There is no secret file or trick.

What Google says about AI search
In May 2026 Google published an official guide called Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search. Its main point: AI Overviews and AI Mode are rooted in Google's core ranking and quality systems, so SEO best practices still apply. Google also says you do not need special markup or a separate "AI file" for these features, that a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to be used in them, and that unique, valuable content matters more than repeating what is already everywhere.
That guidance covers Google only. ChatGPT, Perplexity and other assistants run on their own systems and do not publish their rules the same way. For them, treat advice as "likely", not "proven".
A practical checklist
- Let your pages be indexed. Check that robots.txt and noindex tags are not blocking important pages. Our Robots.txt Tester and Sitemap Validator help.
- Fix the basics. HTTPS, fast loading and a layout that works on a phone. Run a free site audit to see where you stand.
- Answer first. Put the direct answer in the first two sentences, then explain. People and AI systems both like this.
- Say something original. Your real prices, process, photos, examples or numbers. If your page repeats what ten other pages say, there is nothing worth citing.
- Show who is behind the page. Author names, an About page, a clear contact page, and business details that match everywhere.
- Add structured data that matches the page. Organization, LocalBusiness or Article markup, only where it is true. Our Schema Markup Generator can write it.
- Get mentioned elsewhere. Directories, partners, local news and industry sites that name your brand help systems recognize you.
- Keep key pages current. Update prices, hours and services when they change.
How to check whether you are being cited
- Write down the 10 questions your customers ask. Ask them in Google (AI Mode), ChatGPT and Perplexity.
- Record in a sheet: were you mentioned, which page was linked, and who else appeared.
- Repeat monthly. Answers change from run to run, so watch the trend, not a single result.
- In your analytics, look for visits from sources such as chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai. The numbers are usually small, but the direction matters.
What not to waste time on
- Anyone promising guaranteed AI citations. Nobody can promise that.
- Special AI-only markup or files. Google says you do not need them for its own AI features.
- Rewriting every page into one-line paragraphs. Write clearly for people instead.
- Faking brand mentions. Real mentions help. Fake ones are exactly what spam systems are built to catch.
A worked example: a dental clinic page
Imagine a clinic with a page called "Dental Implants". The old version opens with three paragraphs about the clinic's history, then lists "implants, crowns, bridges" in a bullet list. It would be hard to quote anything useful from it.
A better version opens with the answer: "Dental implants replace a missing tooth with a titanium post and a crown. Treatment usually takes several months, and the cost depends on how many teeth are replaced." Then it adds what only this clinic can say: its price range, the steps of its process, how long recovery takes with its patients, who the dentist is and their qualifications, and a short FAQ with real questions from the front desk. The page now has clear, specific, trustworthy statements that a person, or an AI system, can use.
Common mistakes
- Blocking crawlers by accident. A leftover rule in robots.txt or a noindex tag from a staging site can hide your best pages.
- Thin pages. A page that repeats the same generic sentences as every competitor gives nothing new to cite.
- Hidden authorship. If nobody can tell who wrote the page or who runs the business, trust is lower.
- Markup that does not match the page. Structured data is for describing what is already visible, not for adding claims.
- Changing facts without updating them. Old prices and hours make the page unreliable.
A simple monthly routine
- Ask your 10 target questions in the AI tools and record the results.
- Pick the two questions where you are missing and read the pages that are cited. What do they offer that you do not?
- Improve or add one page that answers that question better, with original details.
- Check Search Console for indexing problems on the pages you changed.
- Repeat next month. Progress here is slow and steady.

FAQ
Is GEO different from SEO?
For Google, its own guidance says optimizing for AI features is part of normal SEO. For other assistants, the same basics (clear, original, trusted content) are the safest bet.
Can I pay to be cited in AI answers?
No. Citations are not sold in organic AI answers. Be wary of anyone who says otherwise.
How long does it take?
It depends on your site and your competition. Expect weeks to months, not days, and no guarantees.
