Local SEO Checklist for Plumbers (2026)

Key takeaways
  • Most plumbing searches are urgent. Make your phone number the easiest thing to find and tap.
  • If you visit customers and they do not visit you, set up your profile as a service-area business.
  • Write a useful page for each service and each area you really cover, with real details.
  • Real job photos and honest reviews do more than any trick.

A burst pipe or a broken water heater does not wait. People search on their phone, look at the first few businesses on the map and call. This checklist shows plumbers how to be one of those businesses, using only methods Google describes in its own help pages. To see how your site looks today, try our free site audit.

How Google picks local plumbers

Google bases local results mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. For a plumber, distance is often the deciding factor in emergencies, so the places you serve and the way your profile shows them matter a lot. Relevance comes from accurate categories and clear service pages. Prominence comes from reviews, mentions and links.

1. Your Google Business Profile

  • Use your real business name. Do not add words like "24 hour" or the city unless they are part of your registered name.
  • Choose Plumber as the primary category and add secondary categories only for services you really offer, for example water heater installation or drain cleaning. Check the exact names in Google's category list.
  • Set it up as a service-area business if customers do not visit you. Google lets you list the areas you serve, so choose the places you truly cover.
  • Add opening hours. Show 24 hour or emergency hours only if it is true.
  • Add the services you offer, a short honest description and a link to your most relevant page.
  • Add real photos of your team, your van and finished jobs.

2. Your website

The site should answer the questions a worried customer has in a few seconds.

  • Put a tappable phone number at the top of every page on mobile.
  • Build a separate page for each main service, such as leak repair, drain cleaning, water heater repair and bathroom plumbing. Explain what is included, what affects the price and how quickly you can come.
  • Build pages for areas you really serve. Mention neighbourhoods, typical problems in that area and a real job you did there. Do not copy the same text for every town.
  • Show your licence number and insurance where your local rules require or allow it. It builds trust.
  • Make the site fast on mobile. Test it with our site speed tester.

3. Real job photos

Photos prove you do the work. Add before and after pictures of real jobs (with the customer's permission), your team in uniform and your van. Add a short description of the job to each photo on your website, such as "Replacing a leaking water heater in a small apartment". Do not use stock photos of plumbers, because customers notice.

4. Reviews

  • Ask every happy customer right after the job. A short text message with your review link works well.
  • Never offer a discount or gift in exchange for a review, and never write reviews yourself. Google's policy forbids both.
  • Reply to each review, good or bad, in a polite and quick way. A calm answer to a complaint tells new customers a lot.

5. Track your calls

For a plumber, the phone is the sale. Check each month how many calls and direction requests your profile gets, and which pages on your website lead to calls. Use Google Search Console to see which searches bring visits. Write down every change you make so you can see what worked.

Common mistakes

  • Using a fake address, a virtual office or a mailbox as a business location.
  • Adding keywords to the business name.
  • Creating one page for all services and all towns.
  • Copying the same text on every area page.
  • Hiding the phone number behind a form.

Frequently asked questions

Should I show my home address on my profile?

Not if customers do not visit you there. Read Google's guidelines and set up your profile as a service-area business instead.

How many areas can I serve?

Choose the areas you can really reach in a reasonable time. Listing places far away does not help and can look false.

Do I need a page for every town?

Only for the towns you really serve, and only if you can add real, useful details for each one.

How long does it take to see results?

Often a few months, depending on your area and your competition. Nobody can promise a position, and quick tricks tend to cause trouble later.
